What started as a pilot project has since grown into a powerful, independent platform — one that offers meaningful, actionable insights for those navigating Africa’s logistics landscape.

Our Journey

From Vision to Reality

The Logistics Monitoring System is now in its 3rd iteration stemming originally from the Corridor Performance Monitoring System (CPMS) then known formally as the Truck Monitoring System (TMS). The new LMS has evolved from a custom-developed reporting platform originally commissioned by the USAID, SSATP, and the World Bank and a project experiment funded in 2013 by Trademark Southern Africa (TMSA), thereafter by the Africa Transport Policy Program (SSATP), and then by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

The original Truck Monitoring System (TMS) was developed to measure border crossing and route time throughout Eastern and Southern Africa as input into the policy dialogue on improving corridor efficiency, and to monitor the impact of transport and trade facilitation reforms on the logistics industry, as a cost-effective alternative to trucking and border crossing surveys. Originally, TradeMark Southern Africa (TMSA) had explored the possibility of using GPS data derived from the fleet management systems, operated by trucking companies to measure border crossing time on the North-South Corridor, at Beitbridge (South Africa and Zimbabwe), Chirundu (Zambia and Zimbabwe), and Kasumbalesa (Zambia and DR Congo). Mix Telematics, was the first vehicle tracking system to support this initiative. The monitoring was however discontinued in 2013.

SSATP then funded the further development of the TMS as a pilot that would provide critical data to the Tripartite Regional Economic Communities (RECs)— the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the East African Community (EAC)—and the corridor authorities in the region. However, after USAID, which took over the funding of the TMS from SSATP, discontinued its support, the TMS stopped publishing indicator updates in February 2019. Further support funding was obtained from the World Bank, which saw TMS be updated until December 2022

Crickmay & Associates (PTY) Ltd the developer and owner of the LMS platform then took the decision to usher it into a new sustainable subscription era, by incorporating live vessel tracking data, in addition to its original Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) data source, developing port performance metrics in conjunction with the South Africa Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF) to create a unique intermodal view of logistics in Africa. Crickmay believe that the new approach will bring unparalleled insights for users within the african context.
